Beavers help 'Strike Out Breast Cancer' Aug. 13 at PGE Park

On Sunday, Aug. 13, the Portland Beavers are teaming up with The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Health Net to "Strike Out Breast Cancer" when the team plays host to the Tacoma Rainiers at 2:05 p.m. at PGE Park.

As the Beavers continue to help in the fight to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease, the team will don special jerseys among the many activities to take place during the event. Adidas, the official uniform provider for the Beavers, designed the unique pink-ribbon tops – a black jersey that features a pink-and-white tackle twill "Beavers" script and a pink ribbon on the right sleeve.

As part of the team’s efforts to help raise funds to fight the disease, which is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40-59, the Beavers will be conducting a silent auction before and during Sunday’s game, with each of the authentic, game-worn jerseys going to winning bidders following the game.

Last season, the Beavers raised more than $3,100 through a similar auction. Funds raised Sunday will directly benefit The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Oregon & S.W. Washington Affiliate.

Former Portland Mayor Vera Katz, who fought off the early stages of breast cancer while in office in 2000, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and take part in a special pre-game ceremony to recognize survivors.

In addition, Health Net will present the Komen Foundation with a check for $12,000. Health Net has partnered with the Beavers this season to donate $25 to the foundation’s fundraising efforts for each home strikeout registered by a Portland pitcher.

The first 2,000 fans in attendance for Sunday’s game will receive a commemorative pink baseball, courtesy of Health Net.

Special $5 general admission tickets for the game are available by calling Ashley Bedford at (503) 553-5429 or online at www.portlandbeavers.comchoosing the "Strike Out Breast Cancer" link on the right-hand side of the home page and entering the password "komen" when prompted.

To show support of the foundation’s efforts and/or survivors in their lives, fans are encouraged to wear pink attire or their Komen Race for the Cure T-shirts. This year’s Komen Portland Race for the Cure, which is part of the largest series of 5K runs in the world, will be held Sunday, Sept. 17. For more information, go to www.komenoregon.org.
